When Jeremy first told me about Morro Bay, the tiny town along California's Fundamental Coast where he grew upward, I had a motion picture in my head that looked a lot similar Southern California: waving palm trees, cute people wearing neon shorts and roller skating or whatever, warm sunny days at the beach. Merely when we drove down Highway I to visit Morro Bay for the first time, I realized with a shock that my assumptions were all totally wrong.

To my surprise, the Central Coast (which I'd actually never heard of until coming together Jeremy) is nothing like Southern California. At all.

Morro Bay is a foggy, temperate beach town with more than Eucalyptus trees than palm trees, more otters and surfers than tan people on roller skates, and a serenity quirkiness that I've grown to love over the years and the many, many trips to visit my husband's adorable little hometown.

I did go ane thing correct, though: it's beachy AF. Similar, my husband's high school in Morro Bay is on the beach. Not nigh the beach or shut to the beach – ON the beach.

While the rest of us were running laps around a stuffy gym in high school PE, my husband was running on the sand and going surfing during lunch. How's THAT for a California stereotype?

I'1000 thrilled to finally share our love and appreciation for adorable petty Morro Bay! Next fourth dimension you're taking a road trip along California's Pacific Declension Highway (which cuts directly through the eye of town) be sure t stop and spend a few days exploring!

Pack your numberless, we're heading downwards Highway 1 to visit Jeremy's hometown! Our ride for this trip was the 2019 Mazda CX-v Signature AWD, and it's the perfect road trip car.

Where is Morro Bay?

Morro Bay is located in California'southward Primal Coast, on scenic Highway Ane. Like, literally, the Pacific Coast Highway runs right through town. But if you're on a California route trip, you lot might merely blink and miss it!

Conveniently, Morro Bay is perfectly equidistant from both San Francisco and Los Angeles, smack dab in the heart. You can get at that place in 4 hours from either metropolis, if yous're taking the fast way, along Highway 101.

But Highway 1 is so much prettier! If you take Highway One, it will take anywhere from 5-8 hours from either SF or LA, depending on how many times you stop to gawk at the scenery.

Morro Bay makes the perfect stop on whatever Highway I route trip, along with the remainder of the Central Coast – we absolutely love the entire area.

  • Travel Tip: If y'all're flying in, the easiest matter to do is rent a car in either Los Angeles or San Francisco! In our opinion, the drive south from the Bay Area is prettier, but in terms of length, Morro Bay is the same distance from either San Francisco or Los Angeles.

 Morro Bay Travel Tips

  • Chill. Only similar, chill. You tin can't be stressed in Morro Bay, man, it's just like … full of arctic vibes.
If you don't know what to order, get seafood. It doesn't matter the restaurant. But order something that came from the ocean. Morro Bay is a angling town, and the seafood is as fresh as tin exist!
  • Bring a jacket, it will exist colder than you remember. The Central Coast has quite different weather condition than the warm, sunny beaches in SoCal, and the salty air can be quite dank! The good news is that if you become inland just 15 minutes or so to SLO or Paso Robles, you'll be able to warm up.
  • Mornings are absurd and foggy, but the sun typically comes out at some point. Wake up early to become for a walk along the beach or go surfing and you'll find Morro Bay covered in a layer of coastal fog. Information technology typically clears up and gives style to the dominicus by around noon or so, and then rolls back in overnight.
  • The best weather is in November. November is unusually warm and sunny in Morro Bay, thanks to a weather blueprint that brings stiff winds which button the fog back out to sea! If you visit Morro Bay in December, yous can optimistically pack sunscreen and shorts.
Lia and Jeremy in Morro Bay, California along California's Central Coast.
Morro Bay has two icons: Morro Rock, and these 3 smokestacks. Hence its nickname, "Three Stacks and a Rock." There's even, like, a Morro Bay hand signal: a fist and 3 fingers. So cool.

Things Nobody Tells you about Morro Bay

While we absolutely adore this quirky little town, it's certainly full of eccentricities and character. Here are some of our favorite things that nobody tells yous about Morro Bay!

  • You lot may accept heard of Morro Bay every bit the setting of "Finding Dory," but that's a prevarication. There is no Marine Life Institute and no one calls it "The jewel of Morro Bay, California." Sorry to burst your bubbling, kids. We're pretty sure that the flick was actually gear up in Monterey. Whoops.
  • Look for the "Three Stacks and a Stone": Morro Bay tin be easily identified past its two major landmarks: an old ability plant whose three large smokestacks can be seen from anywhere in town, and Morro Stone, a giant volcanic behemoth located directly on the embankment. "3 Stacks and a Rock" is a local colloquialism for the boondocks, and at that place's even similar, a mitt signal to friction match. At least among high schoolers. Er, at least when Jeremy was in high school.
  • Morro Bay is located on a natural harbor, making it a fantastic identify to come across marine wildlife. It is a natural refuge for animals like harbor seals, sea lions, sea otters, snowy plovers, peregrine falcons (which nest on Morro Rock), and more.
  • Everything in Morro Bay is vaguely pirate-like but aught is specifically pirate themed. There are also quite a lot of fishermen and mermaid references. Essentially, slap something generally nautical themed on a building and it will fit right in.
  • In September, in that location'south an Avocado Margarita festival , because of course in that location is. If you desire to experience MAXIMUM California ridiculousness, be sure to hit upwardly the Drop the Mic Sombrero Competition, which is a sombrero decorating competition that involves, plain, a lot of literal mic dropping. This year, the headlining ring is chosen Dork Band. I mean, this is similar, Top Morro Bay, y'all, nosotros can't make any of this up.

Our favorite spot for otter spotting is on the left of the dock in front of the Great American Fish Company. This serenity fiddling inlet is typically home to otters twelvemonth-round, and during mating season, yous can see upward of xx mama otters cuddling tiny trivial baby otters! This is my absolute favorite spot to visit in Morro Bay – I could sit and watch these cuties for HOURS.
  • Bounding main Lions: There are sea lions all over the place, so you'll definitely see one sunning itself on a gunkhole or swimming around the harbor. To get up shut and personal with a few, rent a kayak and make your way over to the sand bar. There's a floating dock nearby that's a favorite spot for sea lions – y'all'll hear them barking earlier you see them!
  • Harbor Seals: Smaller and less noisy than sea lions, harbor seals are less mutual in Morro Bay merely there's still a good chance of seeing i poking its little whiskers up out of the water to say hello!
  • Birds: Morro Bay is more than just a harbor – information technology'southward also home to an estuary, which is a sanctuary for a huge number of birds. In the estuary y'all tin find birds like the Eared Grebe, Snowy Egret, Greenish Heron, and Anna's Hummingbird. And keep an eye out for peregrine falcons, too: they nest on Morro Rock!
  • Whales: Venture out on a whale watching expedition to encounter these majestic creatures migrating twice per year! For more information well-nigh what you might meet and when, head over to our guide to whale watching in California.
Paddleboarding with a dog is a quintessential Morro Bay activity.

Attempt Surfing or Stand up-Up Paddle Boarding

No trip to Morro Bay is complete without jumping in the water! You'll see locals paddling the harbor all twenty-four hour period long, many joined by adventurous pups. It'due south so pop here that the local triathalon (which Jeremy competed in this yr!) even has both a paddleboard and a kayaking option.

That said, the h2o is freezing cold, so hire a wetsuit from Wavelengths Surf Store before you lot caput out.

You tin have a beginner surf lesson or hire a stand up-up paddle board from Morro Bay Paddle Sports, who also offers SUP lessons for beginners. (For what information technology's worth, stand-up paddle-boarding is much easier than surfing!)

Don't exist surprised to observe yourself paddling by otters, body of water lions, and even dolphins the first time Jeremy e'er went surfing, he met a school of dolphins, because his life is Flipper/whatsoever stereotypical California pic.

One of the all-time beaches for surfing is correct next to Morro Rock (yes, that giant rock y'all see from everywhere) and yous'll see dozens of surfers out there on most days. Neighboring Cayucos likewise has surf-friendly waves.

The one person y'all'll never see out surfing is Lia: read well-nigh her miserable Morro Bay surfing feel.

1 of the all-time ways to experience Morro Bay is on a gunkhole! It is, after all, a harbor/littoral/fishing town. And so don't forget to pack your nautical themed pashmina afghan, k? Psst: this is a 45-infinitesimal Lost Isle harbor bout, complete with tiki themed gunkhole.

Get On a Boat

Grab your nautical themed pashmina afghan and striking the deck, considering Morro Bay is the perfect place for a sea-faring chance.

  • Rent a kayak from Kayak Horizons or Morro Bay Paddle Sports (canis familiaris friendly!) and become kayaking in the harbor & estuary. Yous'll be treated to upwards-close views of harbor seals, and otters, and it's the best way to explore Morro Bay'southward kelp forests from above the water!
  • Want to encounter marine life up close and personal? You can peek at Morro Bay'due south marine life underwater on a glass bottom boat with SubSea Tours.
  • Take a fishing trek! Morro Bay's seafood is incredibly fresh thank you to its population of local fisherman. Go a taste of the life on a chartered fishing outing with Virg's Landing.
  • If your idea of canoeing is a flake more than relaxed than labor-intensive, let someone else do all the work while you relish the view. Volume a chartered cruise with Red Anchor Charters and you lot and bae – or your family unit, or friends, or whoever – tin sit back, relax, have a drink and some snacks, and expect for dolphins and stuff.
Salt Water Taffy in Morro Bay, California.
Ane of the best things to do in Morro Bay is to grab a purse of Salt Water Taffy from Carousel Taffy and take a walk along the Embarcadero.

Stroll Along the Embarcadero

Morro Bay has an adorable waterfront lined with locally endemic shops and restaurants. A stroll along the length of the Embarcadero will reward you lot with some of the most beautiful views of the harbor, Morro Stone, and the critters who hang out there! Here are a few of our favorite stops.

  • Pop into Carousel Taffy for some famous Salt H2o Taffy! They accept nigh a zillion flavors, like chicken & waffles, pickles, and chili mango, so there's definitely at least one you like.
  • The Shell Shop has been selling ocean shells (and sea beat accessories) by the sea shore – er, in Morro Bay, since 1955! Stop and pick up a gift from your trip.
  • We already mentioned the T Pier in front of the Neat American Fish Visitor equally the best place to spot otters, only nosotros're going to stick it in here once more because at that place is no such matter as also many otters. You guys: otters. They are SO Cute.
  • Pop into the Morro Bay Maritime Museum to larn all about maritime history in California. It's easy to find: just look for the giant submarine (nope, information technology'southward not underwater).
A French Dip sandwich from Hofbrau on Morro Bay's Embarcadero.
A French Dip sandwich from Hofbrau on Morro Bay's Embarcadero. The meat is all fabricated in-business firm! Don't forget to grab a bowl of mollusk chowder and some fish & fries while you lot're in town, also.

Stuff Your Face

The food scene in Morro Bay is all about skillful, fresh food – with very few frills. In that location are a few fancier places in town, but for the about office, everything is outgoing and cozy, which is to say you tin exit your pearls and conform jackets at home. Phew!

A few of the local specialties in Morro Bay are clam chowder, fish & chips, and BBQ oysters – all fresh defenseless in the harbor, of course.

Here are our favorite restaurants in Morro Bay, for seafood and across.

  • Having been to simply about every eating place on the Embarcadero, we've narrowed information technology downwardly to two favorites for seafood. First is Dutchman'due south Seafood Business firm: order fish & chips or the clam chowder, in a breadstuff bowl and topped with crab, of course! Or, if yous want to get slightly fancy, head to Tognazzini'southward Dockside and order oysters BBQ'd or smothered with garlic butter.

The Libertine Bar in Morro Bay, California.
The friendly folks at the Libertine Bar, ready to serve you upwardly something sour & succulent (and possibly fermented with harbor saltwater)!

Sip a Local Craft Beer

How exercise yous experience nearly sipping a foamy beer while watching the waves curlicue into the harbor? Merely don't imagine any swaying palm copse or warm breezes – Morro Bay is freezing cold at night.

The Libertine is a fantastic local spot to grab a potable. The brewpub is located straight on the h2o and houses well-nigh 60 beers on tap across THREE confined. Yep, the building has three bars.

Don't forget to try some of the local craft beer made by the The Libertine Brewing Visitor, which uses local wild yeast to create their 1 of a kind beers – including one that'due south made with salt water straight from Morro Bay's harbor (it's … interesting) and some delicious sour beers (which nosotros definitely recommend).

Street art in Morro Bay, California.
Our communication? Get coffee in SLO or Paso Robles and bring it to Morro Bay, where yous can sit outside and watch otters play in the harbor (or watch for whales and dolphins out at sea) while you lot sip your coffee. (BTW, this is our friend – nosotros're non THAT creepy!)

Feel the "Nightlife"

Look: nobody goes to Morro Bay for the nightlife, OK?

If you want to dance and drink and be surrounded past loftier-energy youth, head to nearby San Luis Obispo, which is a college town and thus has higher-town energy.

In Morro Bay, the nightlife is more like a drink on a patio overlooking the h2o, or a crusty swoop bar, or some karaoke. Honestly, the best use of your evening is probably catching up on Netflix and going to bed early on so you can wake upwards at sunrise and go surfing.

That said: if you're feeling nightlife-y, we do have a few suggestions.

By the way: if information technology looks like everyone in the bar knows each other, it's because everyone in the bar knows each other. Strike up a conversation with a local, and if all else fails, just name-drop Jeremy. We're kidding. Merely he was Form President, so if you happen to encounter someone our age who grew upward in Morro Bay, there is a 99.99% chance that they know him.

  • The Siren is a new bar that used to be a crusty pirate dive. Now, it has received a modernized facelift, but still holds onto its approachable downwards domicile bar vibe. You lot'll probably still meet a local fisherman or 3 here, though.
  • Legends: If you feel like getting messy, caput to Legends and try a Sex on the Sidewalk. It is as swish as it sounds and the drink comes with a free condom! Yay, condom sexual activity!

Explore "Downtown"

Like "nightlife," "downtown" is a fleck of a stretch, but nevertheless, this is a really cute part of boondocks away from the Embarcadero that you shouldn't miss.

The 2 blocks on Morro Bay Boulevard between Napa Avenue and Main Street, plus the 2 blocks on Master Street between Morro Bay Boulevard and Dunes, are total of adorable fiddling shops to peek into!

  • Rent bikes at the bike store on Main Street. That's what it'south chosen: The Cycle Store. While the Embarcadero is flat and perfectly suited for a surrey, the residual of Morro Bay is sort of on an uphill like an amphitheater, with the entire boondocks situated effectually Morro Stone like information technology's the star of the testify. Luckily, The Wheel Store has the solution: ebikes! All of the fun but none of the work, aww yiss. Grab a map and head out explore.

The pier in Cayucos, California juts out from its sunny beach! If sleepy beach towns are up your aisle, brand a bespeak to stop by Cayucos. At to the lowest degree to grab some cookies…

Cayucos

Located literally just down the beach from Morro Bay, tiny Cayucos feels totally different than its neighbor.

While Morro Bay feels like a fisherman village, Cayucos feels more like the Former Westward, complete with saloons, antique stores, and adorably old-timey buildings.

Honestly, it's worth the very short trip merely to try the astonishing cookies at Dark-brown Butter Cookie Company. Take a look at our Cayucos travel guide!

Pismo Beach

Venture a little ways due south from Morro Bay and suddenly the fog clears up and gives mode to Pismo Beach, a sunnier and warmer spot for surfers and swimmers.
